Lau Sun House, HACKNEY

Being overlooked on almost all four boundaries the design was influenced by some of Japan's inner city traditional Ryokan's whereby external views are contained within the site’s Architecture. These courtyards traditionally designed for relaxation and contemplation set an example for the inner retreat of Lau Sun House.

A level of intimacy is experienced within the external courtyards whilst a consistent palette and seamless transition provides a sense of openness to the interior.

Within this serene enclosure, the internal arrangement has been organised around a double height opening that houses a monolithic stone staircase introducing an element of unexpected grandeur.
